This is my honest opinion of: THE LEGO MOVIE

The evil Lord Business (voiced by Will Ferrell) has stolen the “Kragle,” a device of great power that will enable him to take over all the realms. Despite the efforts of the powerful wizard Vitruvius (voiced by Morgan Freeman), he is left blinded and defeated. But before Lord Business leaves, Vitruvius tells him of a prophecy of a man called “The Special,” who will find a device called the “Piece of Resistance,” which has the power to undo the Kragle.

Eight and a half years later, a typical construction worker named Emmet Brickowski (voiced by Chris Pratt) is living in what he believes is a utopia under “President” Business’ watchful eye and completes yet another day at work. That is, until he meets Wyldstyle (voiced by Elizabeth Banks), who is in his construction zone and shouldn’t be. However, he inadvertently finds the Piece of Resistance under his site and is thought to be The Special, which catches the attention of Business, who wants Emmet dead. Protected by the likes of Wyldstyle, Batman (voiced by Will Arnett), Vitruvius, and so many more, it’s believed that Emmet still has much to learn about being The Special… or maybe, that he isn’t The Special at all.

Wow, I forgot how much I love this movie. This holds up incredibly well.

This movie almost has you from the very first frame. Not only does Lord Business have a great look as this hilarious villain who towers over everyone on his super high-powered legs and Vitruvius is awesome, but this movie could have so easily cheaped out and used real-looking fire and explosions for their respective action scenes, but they don’t do that. Keeping it within the world of an actual Lego world, the fire, explosions, and water are all just tiny Lego pieces, but the animation is so gorgeous that they still move like water and explosions. The fire is obviously the classic fire pieces that existed, but still. The action is fast-paced and I’d never thought I’d see the day where a kids film would have better looking transforming than an actual Transformers movie.

Okay, I gotta say it. I have to. It’s been a long time coming. I’ve been saying it for years, so I’m going to go on record here. I hate Will Ferrell. I think he is my least favorite funnyman, right up there with Kevin Hart and Adam Sandler. With that said, this is one of Ferrell’s very few performances that I almost adore. By God, his timing is hilarious. Business is that penultimate villain who is ruthless, but so funny. I mean, he blinds a dude! He “kills” his own henchman’s parents! He’s insane, but he’s so great. Even his brief live-action stint in the end is extremely heartfelt. Seriously, I watch this movie and I keep screaming, “Where is this Will Ferrell?? Why am I getting HOLMES & WATSON Will Ferrell and not this Will Ferrell???” While I can’t say for sure if only Ferrell could make this role work, considering the material is actually pretty solid in of itself, I have to give credit where credit is due. Will Ferrell is so good in this movie.

Emmet is almost too average. He’s so plugged in to his society that he doesn’t know anything other than the life that’s been laid out in front of him. Watch the same brain-dead TV show, get hyped by mundane things, there is absolutely nothing special about him other than the circumstances that make him the hero of the story. But this actually works in his favor, as we see how much he develops over time. He does come up with his own unique ideas, and as dumb and useless as they appear to be, there are ways to utilize them to make them incredibly useful. He’s a bit of screamer when danger rolls around, but he never truly runs from his circumstances. Granted, it’s probably because he’s just really into Wyldstyle, but he does have a sense of bravery, making him a lovable goofball hero.

Every character gets their moment in the sun. Wyldstyle is a lot fun, Batman is so hilarious that it’s no wonder he got his own spin-off movie, Vitruvius is great, and I swear that my biggest laughs came from Good Cop/Bad Cop. “Darn darn darny darn!” and his freak-out with kicking that chair and hurling it at one of his own minions, dude, I’m still laughing at that.

<<<SPOILERS – highlight to reveal>>> [ Let’s also be honest that this is also pretty subversive of a lot of movies too. I mean, exactly how many “chosen one” and “prophecy” stories exist? Way too many. But this movie finally fesses up to that overused crap. Vitruvius remarks that he made it all up. There is no “Special,” or “Piece of Resistance.” Everything just happened to fall into place like that. Pure freaking luck. Hey, at some point, a lie that works out should just be rolled with. ] <<<END SPOILERS>>>

There’s almost too much to go through. I couldn’t take a single note while watching this because it’s too hypnotic. Every minute of this movie, there’s something imaginative and visually great that I couldn’t tear my eyes away. I loved it and it’s a sign of truly great movie. Great jokes, great imagery, it’s just a wonderful kids movie that appeals to adults as well. I think this is a must-see for anyone looking for a great animated comedy, whether or not you’re a kid or an adult.

My honest rating for THE LEGO MOVIE: 5/5
